Motivating & learning during corona; 5 tips

One of the most important reasons for a low rating of an online course is that developers mainly focus on the content. A good example is the professor who records a lecture in the lecture hall. But a lecture hall has a different social dynamic than your student room. Where, as a student, you experience social dynamics before, during and after the lecture, the loneliness of your student room can feel overwhelming.

At IJsfontein, we have been designing motivation for 20 years.

We base this on the self-determination theory of Deci & Ryan (1985; 2000). Self-determination theory first distinguishes between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation comes from within: the learner is motivated to learn something they are interested in themselves. With extrinsic motivation, external stimuli motivate the learner, such as a reward in the form of a high grade. Intrinsic motivation often leads to better learning results.

According to Deci & Ryan, course developers can increase intrinsic motivation if they respond to three basic psychological needs:

  • Autonomy. The learner has the freedom to carry out an activity as they see fit and has influence on what they do.
  • A sense of competence. The confidence the learner needs to have in their own abilities.
  • Relatedness, social connection. Connection with the environment, or having trust in others. And a positive social climate; learners must feel free to ask questions and not be afraid to make mistakes.

Learning without social connection lowers motivation.

This is the main reason why people don't finish their online course. There is no one to help, encourage or challenge you. Looking for a motivating online learning experience? 👉 Discover the possibilities of UpTrek. 👈

IJsfontein's 5 tips

Implementing the tips below in your learning or work design leads to increased motivation. And therefore to a better return on training and collaboration, especially in times of corona.

Create teams; Create diverse teams within your work and learning environment. The ideal team size is 5 to 7 employees. A team works together, learns from each other and motivates each other.

Competition; Implementing a team competition stimulates engagement, fanaticism and collaboration, and thereby increases motivation.

Urgency; Adding urgency creates more pressure and eliminates the procrastination most people are familiar with.

Gamification; Implementing gamification creates a balance between learning, working and entertainment.

Voluntary; Voluntary participation provides autonomy, which is important for motivation and perseverance.
